Your Skin

For those of you who have a fascination with leather goods, I am here to shed some knowledge of this wonderful material.
Leather is a material created through the tanning of hides, skins and furs of animals, mainly cows. Leather is a very important clothing material, and other uses are endless. Together with wood, leather, formed the basis of much ancient technology. Skin with skin still attached is simply called fur.
There are a number process by which the skin of a dead animal can be formed in a flexible, strong material commonly called leather. Vegetable-tanned leather is tanned with tannin (hence the name "tanning") and other ingredients found in vegetable matter, tree bark and other sources. It is flexible and brown, with the exact shade depending on the mix of chemicals and the color of the meat. Vegetable-tanned leather is not stable in water, tends to discolor, and if left to soak and then dry it will shrink and become less flexible and more difficult. The hot water will be reduced drastically and plasticize, becoming rigid and eventually becoming brittle. Alum-tanned leather with aluminum salts mixed with a variety of binders and protein sources, such as flour, egg yolk, etc. Purists argue that alum-tanned leather is technically "tawed" and not tanned, as the resulting material will rot in water. Very light shades of leather are possible with this process, but the material result is not as flexible as vegetable tanned leather. Rawhide is made by scraping the skin thin, soaking in lime, and then expands as it dries. Like alum tanning, rawhide is not technically "leather", but is usually grouped with other forms. Rawhide is stiffer and more brittle than other forms leather, and is found mainly in applications such as drum heads where they do not need to flex significantly, is also cut into the cables for use cords, or seams, or make toys for dogs. Boiled leather is a leather products (vegetable tanned leather) that has been hardened by immersion in hot water or boiled in wax or similar substances. Historically, it was used as a weapon because of its hardness and light weight, but has also been used for bookbinding. Chrome-tanned leather, invented in 1858, is tanned using chromium sulfate, chromium salts and others. It is more agile and flexible vegetable tanned leather, and do not discolor or lose shape as drastically as in water vegetable tanned. More esoteric colors are possible using chrome tanning. Brain-tanned leathers are exceptionally water absorbent. They are made by a process of labor using emulsified oils (often those of animal brains) and has not been industrialized. Known for its exceptional softness and its ability to be washed.
Leather, usually vegetable-tanned leather can be oiled to improve its water resistance. This supplements the natural oils remaining in the skin itself, which can be washed through repeated exposure to water. frequent lubrication of leather, with mink oil, neatsfoot oil or similar material, remains flexible and improve your life dramatically.
In general, leather is sold in three ways … Full grain leather, made from the finest raw material, are clean natural hides which have not been sanded to remove imperfections. Hair has been removed. The grain remains in its natural state will allow the best fiber strength, resulting in greater durability. The grain also natural natural breathability, resulting in greater comfort. The natural Full-Grain surface will wear better than other skins. Instead of using out, will be developed a natural "Patina" and grow more beautiful over time. The best furniture and footwear, are made of full grain leather.
Corrected-Grain leather (also called "top grain leather). Corrected Leather is fuzzy on one side and smooth on the other. The smooth side is the side where the hair and natural grain used to be. The skins, which are made from inferior quality raw materials, has all natural grain of sand, and applies an artificial grain. Top grain leather generally must be well painted to hide the sanding and stamping process.
Suede is a division within the skin. It is "fuzzy" on both sides. Suede is less durable than top grain. Suede is cheaper because many pieces of suede can be split from a single thickness of leather, while a top piece of grain can be done. However, as watching all of the grain is in demand, manufacturers use a variety of techniques to make suede appear to be full of grain. For example, in one process, the glue is mixed with a side of the chamois, then pressed through rollers, which are flattened and, although one side giving the appearance of material Smooth full flower. Whip is one of the commercial product.
Leather of other animals
Today, most leather is made from cow skins, but there are many exceptions. Lamb and deer skin are used for soft leather in more expensive clothes. Kangaroo leather is used to make items that need to be strong but flexible as motorcycle gloves. Kangaroo leather is favored by motorcyclists specifically because of its lighter weight and greater resistance to abrasion, compared with cowhide. Leather made from more exotic skins has at different times in history has been considered of great beauty. For this reason certain snakes and crocodiles have been hunted almost to extinction.
In the 1970s, ostrich farming for their feathers became popular. As a byproduct, ostrich leather came to be available and is currently used by all big fashion houses such as Hermes, Prada, Gucci and Louis Vuitton. This skin type has a characteristic "goose bumps" look because of the large follicles from which the feathers grew.
In Thailand, the Sting Ray leather handbags and belts used in the same way as regular cow leather. Sting ray leather is as tough and durable as hard plastic. The skin is often dyed black and covered with small, round bumps in the natural pattern posterior crest of an animal. These bumps are often subsequently dyed white to highlight the decoration.
Preservation and conditioning of the skin
The natural fibers of leather will break down over time. acids leathers are particularly vulnerable to red rot, which causes the surface and spraying change in consistency. Damage from red rot is aggravated by high temperatures and relative humidities, and is irreversible.
Exposure to long periods low relative humidity (Below 40%) can cause leather to dry out, irreversably changing the fibrous structure of the skin.
Several treatments are available, such as conditioners, but these are not recommended by the Conservatives, and that permeate the structure of the leather artifact with active chemicals, are sticky, and attract stains.
